CPO from the dealer vs a bank repo through lake park, what you give up

the username is not a joke, i have a spreadsheet, and after asking questions in two other threads i owe the board the actual comparison. i am buying my first car that costs more than a used Civic and it is going to be a 2022 RX 350. there are two columns.

column one is L/Certified at the Lexus store in Maplewood. 2022 RX 350 AWD Premium, 34,100 miles, 41,900 plus a 299 doc fee, and the Lexus CPO warranty which on this car runs to six years from the original in service date with no mileage cap, so roughly two more years. it comes with the 161 point inspection, tires and brakes brought up to a minimum, and i can drive it around the block as many times as i want before i sign.

column two is a bank repo through lakeparkautoconnection.com. same model year, similar miles, sitting at a lender yard in Oklahoma. starting bid well under the Maplewood number. no buyer's premium, no doc fee, free delivery because Oklahoma City to Minneapolis is inside their 1,000 miles, a limited warranty good for six months or ten thousand miles, and a 30 day refund window in case the listing materially misdescribed the car. what i give up: the test drive, an inspection i can read, two years of dealer warranty, the dealer's financing rate for certified cars, and knowing what i am paying until i have already paid it, because the bid is sealed.

honest question for the people who have done both. is the 6 month warranty worth anything real, or is it a coupon. and is the CPO inspection worth what the store charges for it, or is it a sticker.

from the side of the business that feeds both of those columns. CPO is a retail product. the store buys the car at the lane or takes it on trade, spends 800 to 1,500 on reconditioning, pays the manufacturer a certification fee, and prices the car 2,000 to 3,500 above the same car sold uncertified. you are buying a real inspection and a real warranty, and you are paying full retail for both. the inspection is done by the store that is selling you the car, which does not make it fake, it makes it theirs.

the repo has no reconditioning. you are buying it the way the last owner left it in the yard, and the last owner was, by definition, somebody who had stopped spending money on it. that is the whole discount. the 30 day guarantee is about the description matching the car, not about the car being nice. the 6 months is real but short, and the lake park one is a limited warranty, so read the list of what it covers and treat it as a net for the first ninety days, not a plan for the next two years.

what nobody puts in the spreadsheet: the CPO car has a price and a parking spot, you can go buy it today. the repo has a bid, and you might not win. put a row in for that.

i do L/Certified inspections. it is not a sticker. what it catches on an RX at 34k is mostly tires under the minimum, which get replaced, brake pads under the minimum, cabin filter, a wiper, an alignment if the tire wear says so, and every stored code cleared and the truck road tested. it will not catch a car that was flooded and dried out well, and it will not catch a lazy oil change history, because the car looks fine on the day. so the value of the inspection is the tires, brakes and alignment, call it 1,200 in parts and labor if the car needed them, and the value of the warranty is peace of mind on a 2GR-FKS V6 and an 8 speed that almost never break in the first six years anyway. the RX 350 is a boring car in the best way. that is why the certified premium on an RX is money you may never use.

on the blind one: ask for underside photos and a photo of the oil on the dipstick. then have somebody near the yard do a pre purchase inspection if that is allowed, 150 to 250, and if it is not allowed, bid like you are going to spend 1,200 on tires and brakes the week it arrives, because you might.

we bought our Escalade CPO in 2023 and used the certified warranty once, for a rear camera module at 39k that would have been about 900. so the premium roughly paid for itself and then some, but that is a Cadillac with a lot of electronics. on an RX i am not sure it would have. what i valued more than the warranty was walking around the truck with a flashlight and driving it on the interstate before i signed. if you have never bought a car you cannot drive first, that is the row in your spreadsheet that does not have a dollar number, and it is the one that matters most for a first car.

i am the one who gave up the test drive and i want to add one thing to how you think about it. i did not give up the test drive. i test drove two GX 460s at two dealers before we ever bid, so the blind one was the same truck in a different color and i already knew what the seat and the steering felt like. what i gave up was driving that specific truck, and for a Lexus with a clean carfax and dealer service records that felt like a small thing. for a car i had never sat in, it would not have.

so drive three RX 350s at dealers first, on your own time, no pressure. then the lake park column stops being "a car i have never driven" and becomes "an RX 350 i have driven, that i cannot check for a curb rashed wheel." that is a much smaller gap, and the listing will probably tell you about the wheel anyway. ours did.

update, and it is not the ending anyone predicted. i drove three RX 350s at three dealers like megan said, and they are all the same car, which is the point of an RX. then i put a bid on the Oklahoma one through the outfit in lake park. 36,400. i lost. you get an email that says you were not the high bidder and that is the whole email, no number, no "you were close." the Maplewood car sold the same week to somebody else.

so my spreadsheet now has a row called "did not win" with a real number in it, which is the two weeks i spent waiting. the new plan is to keep watching the listings after the first of the year and bid on the next RX with dealer service history, a little higher than last time, and to keep one CPO car in the other column as the fallback so i am not stuck. the thing i learned is that the blind bid is not the scary part. the scary part is being the kind of person who bids low to feel safe and then loses the car. that was me.
