2022 BMW X5 xDrive40i from a lender yard in Illinois, and the factory warranty transfer question

the truck first, then the question, because the question is the reason for the thread. 2022 X5 xDrive40i M Sport, Phytonic Blue, 29,400 miles when i bought it in august. it was sitting at a lender storage yard south of Chicago, near Joliet. i put in one sealed bid of 45,900 through lake park auto connection, won it, wired it, and it came up I-35 on an open carrier and landed at my office in Duluth twelve days later. no buyer's premium, no shipping bill because Joliet to Duluth is about 470 miles and they cover the first thousand. i had driven three of these at dealers in the cities first, and the cheapest of those was 52,400 with 34k on it, so i was comfortable with the number.

now the part i did not think about until after i won. the door jamb says built 10/2022 and the carfax shows it going into service in november 2022. BMW's new vehicle warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles from the in service date. so when it landed i had about ten weeks and 20,000 miles of factory warranty left, on a truck that had been repossessed and sold through a broker to a guy the dealer had never met. does that warranty follow the car? or does a repo sale break it somehow? and the bigger money question: BMW sells an extended service contract, but as far as i can tell you have to buy it before the factory warranty ends, which for me is the middle of november. anyone been through this?

service history first, because you guessed right. the BMW store pulled it up: the two free oil services under the maintenance plan at 10k and 20k, both done at a store in the Chicago suburbs, then nothing from 20k to 29k. so the last owner drove 9,000 miles on the second oil change and then stopped paying for everything at once. i had the oil and filter done the week it landed, 190 at an independent here, and the brake fluid because it was due by date. the dealer was not weird at all. the service advisor asked for the VIN and my phone number, that was it. he did not ask where i bought it and i did not offer.

paper, since it comes up in every one of these threads: Illinois title, the bank's release quoting the VIN, and the sale document naming the bank on the seller line and the broker underneath it. one call to the bank confirmed the release. the one thing i will say against the process is the confirmation email for my wire took two days to show up and i called twice in between, and both times the person on the phone said it was fine and it was. i would have liked the email on day one. the lake park listing itself was accurate, the mileage matched within 30, and the two things it disclosed (a scuff on the rear bumper cover and a cracked cargo cover) were both there and both what i expected.

extended contract: shopping it. the Duluth store said 4,150 for the Platinum, a store in the cities said 3,650 for the same thing. deadline is november 14 so i will decide by then.

sorry, meant to answer this weeks ago. bought the BMW Platinum contract from the cities store on november 12 for 3,650, over the phone, and the number did not move. the Duluth store, when i told them, came down to 3,800 and i had already signed. so shop it, it is a dealer price.

and the factory warranty got used with days to spare. on november 20 the tailgate stopped latching on the first try, the lower part of the split gate would just bounce back. Duluth store replaced the latch under the factory warranty, no charge, loaner for the day. nobody cared that the truck came through the broker in lake park, the VIN had coverage until the 14th of the month before that and the repair order was dated the 21st, which turned out fine because they had opened the ticket on the 13th when i first called about it. lesson there: if something is acting up near the end of the factory warranty, call and get it on paper before the date, even if you cannot get in until after.

32,900 miles now, winter tires on, the thread about that is in the owners board. so far the truck owes me 190 for an oil change and a 40 dollar cargo cover off ebay.
