2019 X5 40i losing coolant out of warranty, where does it go and is an extended warranty worth it now

the no puddle thing is normal for these, the engine bay is packed and the coolant lands on hot stuff and cooks off before it hits the floor, which is your sweet smell. first cheap check: pull the cover and look at the expansion tank on the passenger side, they crack along the mold seam and you will see a white crusty line. second: any independent BMW shop will pressure test the system for 100 to 150 and it usually shows in ten minutes. do that before you let anyone start replacing parts by guess.

not my brand at work but my brother in law runs an independent euro shop in Bloomington and the B58 coolant complaint comes in every week. the list, in the order they see it: the heat management module, which is the electric thermostat housing on the side of the block, weeps at its seal and drips onto the transmission bell housing where you never see it. the expansion tank, like above. the plastic coolant pipe fittings at the turbo return line. and further out, the water pump, but that usually comes with a whine or a code first.

the pressure test with UV dye is the right move. what it costs at his shop: heat management module about 1,100 to 1,300 with the BMW part and a coolant fill, tank around 400, a turbo coolant line 350 to 500 depending on which one. the dealer will be roughly half again on all of those.

on the warranty. read the exclusions before you pay for one. a lot of the third party contracts have language about "seepage" and "gaskets and seals" that lets them decline exactly the repair you are about to need. and none of them will cover a condition that exists on the day you sign, so if a shop has already written "coolant loss" on an invoice, that HMM is pre-existing in their eyes.

remarketing manager for a regional lender, so i see hundreds of these come back off lease at 36 to 45k and a handful of higher mileage ones from repos. under 50k the G05 coolant complaint is rare. between 70 and 100k the condition reports start showing "HMM replaced" or "coolant residue at thermostat housing" often enough that i budget for it on anything we take back at that mileage.

the warranty math nobody wants to hear: at 3,200 for four years, one heat management module job does not pay it back, two do, and a water pump plus HMM does. the contracts pay out, i have seen the claims, but only on a covered part and only when the shop's write up says "failed" and not "seeping." the shops that know this write it up correctly. mine would be: put 3,200 in a separate account and keep driving. if nothing else breaks it is yours.
